Charles James GRAY, son of George GRAY (1800?-1874?) and Lucy BARFOOT (1805-1876), was born in February 1840 (estimated) in Putney, Surrey.^1,2 He was baptised on 29 March 1840 in Putney.¹ He appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Putney aged 2.³ The address was: Lower Common, Putney, Surrey. He appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Putney aged 11.⁴ The address was: 10 Sadler's Buildings, Putney, Surrey. On 30 March 1851 he was a Scholar.⁴ He appeared in the census on 7 April 1861 in Putney aged 20.⁵ The address was: 11 Sadler's Buildings, Putney, Surrey. On 7 April 1861 he was a Labourer in Putney.⁵ He married Eliza Jane GREEN on 18 October 1863 in Wandsworth, Surrey when he was 22 and she was 22. The marriage was witnessed by William Haynes and Sarah Maynard.⁶ The address was: All Saints Church, High Street, Wandsworth, Surrey.
